La Verne, CA - The University of La Verne women's soccer team hosted the Whittier Poets in a SCIAC conference game at Ortmayer Stadium on Wednesday night. The Leopards looked to protect home field as they battled the Poets in the early season SCIAC conference contest. Undefeated entering the game, the Poets provided the Leopards the perfect opportunity to state their claim as one of the top teams in the SCIAC. Both teams competed with high intensity through the first half of play, canceling each other out with a halftime score of 0-0. Second-half action would resemble the first as each team controlled the nets defensively for the majority of the half. Whittier would score at the 83:09 mark, giving the Poets a 1-0 lead and ultimately the victory by a final score of 1-0.
Head coach Lauryn Pehanich is confident in her team's performance and the resiliency to bounce back. "We stick to our plan. Nothing changes. We will be better individually with the ball and we will work on finishing the chances we create for ourselves."
The Leopards are back in action at home Saturday, September 17th against Claremont-M-S. The game starts at 11:00 am.
