Throwers, Relay Teams Highlight Pomona-Pitzer Meet

CLAREMONT – Deanna Doss won the women's hammer throw and the La Verne women took the 4x100 relay as the University of La Verne track and field teams continued their preparation for the conference season at the Pomona-Pitzer All Comers meet on Saturday.

Doss logged 148 feet (45.11m) to beat out unattached competitors Brianna Panapa and Carissa English in the hammer throw. The senior was impressive in the other throwing events, too. Doss was second behind Panapa in the discus throw with a toss of 111-9 (34.07m) and third in the shot put (35-3/10.74m).

Freshman Jaclyn Castleberry flashed her potential in the throws. The Norco native was just behind Doss in both the shot put (34-11/10.64m) and the discus (107-3/32.69m), and was 10th in the hammer throw with a 93-2 (28.39m).

Chris Gura tossed a 125-1 (37.6m) in the men's discus throw to take third. Brock Booth and Matt Rehder finished 3-4 in the javelin throw, hurling 163-0 and 161-1, respectively.

The women's 4x100 relay team of Ebony Williams, Tanesha Spencer, Tiahna Gillon and Nicole Crutchfield notched the other event win for the Leopards. The quartet finished the race in 50.07 seconds to edge Chapman.

The men's 4x100 relay team was also impressive. James Francis, Nick Gonsalves, Robert Oshodin and Chancise Watkins combined to run a 41.46, which was good for second place behind Venezuela's national team. Three members (Alberto Aguilar, Arturo Ramirez and Jose Melendez) of the Venezuelan team were a part of Venezuela's 4x400 team that placed 7th in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

Mike Pore posted a 49.19 in the 400m to place fifth behind four Venezuelans and was the only collegiate runner to finish faster than 50 seconds.

The Leopards are back in action next Saturday at the Rossi Relays host by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
