PASADENA, Calif. — Seniors Chancise Watkins and Lenore Moreno of the University of La Verne track and field teams were named Male and Female Athletes of the Week for their championship performances at the 2014 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
Moreno claimed the national title in the 10,000 meters with a winning time of 34 minutes, 25.39 seconds. The title by Moreno is the seventh outdoor track and field national championship in La Verne history and the third by a La Verne woman. Moreno went into the race as the top seed after clocking the third-fastest Division III time ever (33:49.04) at the Stanford Invitational in April.
Watkins ran the anchor leg of the championship-winning men's 4 x 100 meters relay team and collected two other All-America honors at the national championships. The relay team clocked a time of 40.52 seconds to set a school, SCIAC and stadium record. Watkins also took second in the 200 meters (21.11) and placed fourth 400 meters (47.67) after going into both events as the top seed. Watkins became the first SCIAC athlete to run the 200 in under 21 seconds, posting a 20.99 in the prelims. Watkins accounted for all of La Verne's 23 team points, which was good enough to place the men's team sixth in the final standings.
Between the two, Moreno and Watkins possess a total of three national championships, 10 All-American honors, six SCIAC championships, four U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association West Region Athlete of Year awards and seven school records.
In addition, Moreno and Watkins were named the 2014 Scafani Awards winners at the annual Senior Blanket Awards last Friday.
This season, Moreno and Watkins were each named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week four times.
