Women’s T&F Places Five on Academic All-SCIAC Team

PASADENA — Five members of the University of La Verne women's track and field team were named to the Academic All-SCIAC Team, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Emily Bieker, Angelyn Caldwell, Deanna Doss, Olga Saldivar and Alysse Thummel all were recognized for their efforts in the classroom.

Bieker, a sophomore photography major and a jumps specialist, posted a career-best mark in the triple jump at the SCIAC Multi-Dual No. 2 with a leap of 33 feet, 3.75 inches (10.15 meters).

Caldwell, a sophomore physics major, posted two of her season best performances at the 2014 SCIAC Championships, going 1:10.46 in the 400 meter hurdles and clearing a 8-06.75 (2.61m) in the pole vault.

Doss, a graduating business administration major, was crowned the SCIAC champion in the hammer throw with a toss of 160-01 (48.79m) and just missed out on All-America honors in the event with a ninth place finish (172-07) at the NCAA National Championships. Doss also posted her career-best marks this season in the shot put (40-04) and the discus (131-09).

Saldivar, a graduating criminology major, was a part of La Verne's season-best 4x800 and distance medley relay teams.

Thummel, a graduating kinesiology major and a distance specialist, broke the school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.79 at the SCIAC championships. Thummel was also named La Verne's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

To be eligible for selection to the team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.40  cumulative grade point average at his/her current institution, must have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution, must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility and must have competed in at least one of the Conference Multi-Dual meets or the Conference Championship meet during the current track & field season. In the case of transfers, graduate students, and two-year college graduates, the student-athlete must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution.
