Moreno Named SCIAC Female Athlete of the Week

PASADENA, Calif. – University of La Verne track and field athlete Lenore Moreno was named the SCIAC Female Athlete of the Week of April 14-20, the conference office announced on Tuesday. This is the third time this season that Moreno has garnered the honors.

On April 18, Moreno won her section of the 5,000 meters at the 56th annual Mt. San Antonio College Relays with a time of 16 minutes, 28.26 seconds, which shattered a 32-year-old SCIAC record set by Cindy Nagle (16:38.1) of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in 1982.

Moreno also set a new La Verne standard, surpassing Janice Krich's mark of 17:14 set in 1993.

Moreno's time currently ranks second in Division III this season. Cara DeAngelis of Ohio Wesleyan posted a 16:25.30 at the Jesse Owens Classic to take the top spot on Saturday.

Moreno is one of the favorites to win the 5,000 meters at the SCIAC Championships on May 2-3, which will be the next meet in which she will compete. Melissa Skiba of Cal Lutheran, who has the fourth fastest time in the country, will be the closest competitor. Skiba recorded a 16:46.80 at the Occidental Distance Carnival on March 14.

Moreno now owns two SCIAC records. On April 4, Moreno posted the third-fastest time in Division III history in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational (33:49.04).
