Women Sweep, Men 1-1 in SCIAC Multi-Dual 2

LA VERNE – It has been three weeks since the University of La Verne men and women's track and field team have competed in SCIAC action, but the Leopards looked sharp in SCIAC Multi Dual 2 on Saturday at the Ortmayer Stadium. The women swept against Redlands, Whittier and Chapman. The men beat Whittier, but were edged by Redlands.

The women remain undefeated in SCIAC while the men stand 2-2 in conference.

It was a big day for Chancise Watkins and Deanna Doss. Watkins broke the school record and his personal best in the 200 meter and the 400 meter, respectively. Doss broke the school record in the hammer throw.

Watkins's finished the 200 in 21.29 seconds and ran his personal best of 47.72 seconds in the 400 meter race, taking first place overall in both events.

Doss continues to grow each week and it's showing in the results. Doss not only won the hammer throw with a toss of 51.35m, but she also took first in the shot put with a throw of 11.20m. Her performance in the discus was also strong, coming in second place with a throw of 35.17m.

Great performances came from the 4x100 team and the 4x400 team to earn points for the women. The 4x100 team took first with a time of 48.24 seconds. The 4x400 team also took first with a time of 3:59.82.

The women went 1-2-3 in the 100 meter dash. Nicole Crutchfield came in first with a time of 12.43 seconds. Ebony Williams took second with a time of 12.75 seconds and Tiahna Gillion followed with a time of 12.83 seconds.

Alexa Smith had a good day in the 200 meter and in the 400 meter. Smith took second in the 200m running a time of 26.47 seconds. In the 400m she ran a time of 59.30 seconds finishing in first place.

Alysse Thummel snagged points for her team with a second place finish in the 800 meter race. Thummel ran a time of 2:24.74 seconds.

Lenore Moreno, coming off a national championship in the indoors, got second place in the 1500 meter run at 4:52.04.

Jasmin Gonzalez, Carmen Sandoval and Katie Yeager led another trio sweep in the 400 meter hurdle race. Gonzalez took first with a time of 1:06.08. Sandoval took second with a time of 1:10.65 and Yeager took third with a time of 1:11.44.

Yeager also won the pole vault with a 3.55m and her partner-in-crime Taylor Bernhard took second, vaulting 3.40m.

Jumpers had a good showing as well, highlighted by the leaps of Lindsey Foster, Emily Bieker, and Jessica Reeves. Foster took first in long jump with a leap of 5.18m and set a personal best in triple jump with a jump of 10.28m.

Along with recording a personal best, Bieker took third in triple jump with a jump of 10.15m.

"I am so grateful to have [former La Verne All-American and national champion] Coach Paul Turner this year on our coaching staff," said Bieker. "I had a personal record by over a foot this week and I believe it is due to the hard work I have put in as an athlete and he has put in as a coach. I can't wait for the rest of the season."

Reeves also recorded a personal best with a jump of 10.07m in triple jump.

"I feel a step closer to a repeat of another undefeated season for the women," said Reeves. "I am extremely proud of myself for getting closer to my goal marks each week and my season record of 10.07m proves the hard work I have been putting in. The amazing support of Coach Paul and the rest of our jump squad also helps."

Jaclyn Castleberry had a good throwing day in the discus, taking first with a throw of 37.30m.

Taking first and second place in javelin were Christiana Coughlin (37.22m) and Angelina Arreola (33.40m).

Although the men did not finish the way they wanted to, individuals stepped up and did the best they could to get as many points as they could for their team.

In the 4x100 relay, Nick Gonsalves, James Francis, Robert Oshodin and Chancise Watkins had four perfect handoffs to not only took a first place finish, but also posted a possible national qualifying time of 41.37 seconds.

Gonsalves brought the speed and took first in the 100 meter race with a time of 11.06 seconds.

Tanner Long and Jayden Earlywine came up big with a first and second place in the 1500 meter run. Long ran a time of 4:07.45. Earlywine was not far behind with a time of 4:08.45.

The Leopards managed to get another 1-2 place finish in the 5000 meter run. Bryan Hayes took first with a time of 16:02.89. Tanner Long was back at it again with a second place finish, finishing the race with a time of 16:11.30.

James Francis is used to running from event to event and never fails to disappoint. Francis took first in high jump with a 1.95m, leaped to a second place finish in the long jump (6.79m), and placed third in triple jump (13.11m).

Another 1-2 sweep went on over at the pole vault pit between Jason Nicholls and Jared Manke. Nicholls finished first with a vault of 4.60m and Manke finished second with a vault of 4.30m.

Matt Reinbolz scored for his team by finishing first in the discus throw with a throw of 41.64m. Jason Nicholls was ready to go again and finished third with a throw of 38.30m.

SCIAC leader in the javelin Matt Rehder scored more points for his team with a first place finish throwing 57.04m.

"I felt like I had a bigger throw in me which made me a little frustrated when I didn't get a better throw in the finals, but ultimately I was happy that I could score points for our team," said Rehder.

The Leopards return to action next Saturday when they head to San Diego to compete in the Cal/Nevada Collegiate Championships.
