La Verne Defeats John Hopkins University In Gary Troyer Tournament

La Verne, CA - The University of La Verne played host for the first day of tournament games in the 2022 Gary Troyer Tournament. The tournament features twenty-four teams from across the United States of America to compete in a total of forty-six games. The Leopards second game of the opening day pitted them against John Hopkins University.

The Leopards started the game blazing, scoring four goals in the first quarter of play. Leopard Alam Chang would score the Leopards first point of the game near the halfway point of the first quarter. Less than a minute later Gage Unsoeld would score the second point of the game for the Leopards, establishing a tone early on that would carry for the entire game. The first period of play would see La Verne allow only two goals, leading 4-2 after the first period of play ended.

The Leopards then took it to another level, scoring six goals in the second period of play. James Cano and Peter Trinh both scored two goals in the period while Cody Lehotsky and Jaden Javier each scored one goal for La Verne. The Leopards went to halftime leading by a score of 10-8.

The second half of action was closely contested as both teams tightened up defensively and equalized each other scoring. The Leopards scored five goals in the second half while giving up four goals and was able to secure the win over John Hopkins University 15-12. Peter Trinh led La Verne with four goals scored and three assists. Joe Lamson controlled the net with fourteen saves in the victory.

The Leopards will take on Mount St. Mary's (10:20 AM) and Long Island (3:40 PM) in day two of the tournament at Las Flores Park.
