Leopards Control Game, Defeat Sagehens On The Road

Claremont, CA - The University of La Verne women's team continued their road trip with another road conference game against the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens, picked to finish second in the 2022 SCIAC pre-season polls, welcomed the Leopards to their home for an early Saturday afternoon game. From the onset, La Verne controlled the game, jumping out to a 6-1 lead that turned into a 13-4 lead early in the first quarter. After the first quarter, La Verne led by a score of 23-14. La Verne limited the Sagehens to ten points in the second quarter, entering the half leading 32-24. The Leopards continued to pressure the Sagehens defensively throughout the third quarter, scoring 27 points in the third, carrying a 60-47 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Leopards withstood a late fourth-quarter rally from Pomona-Pitzer to defeat the Sagehens 69-60. Chiara Brown led LA Verne with 29 points. Kendall Stanley led the Leopards' effort on the glass with 10 rebounds. Head coach Jason Pruitt stressed the importance of his team playing at a high level for an entire 40 minutes. "I think we can compete in games, but we're not gonna really win games until we play right every night. Until we do the right things and get in the right habits it's going to be a struggle every game. I hope we get better as the season goes on, but in the meantime, we just have to be better in practice. We need our shooters to hit more shots, we need our guards to take better care of the ball, and we need our post players to finish. It's a long year and we will get better. Like I tell our players, every night cannot be your night, it's up to you to find another way to make an impact. We will hit the court on Monday and try to fix what we need to fix."

La Verne will take on Cal Luther at home Wednesday, December 7th at The Tents. Tip-off is a 7:00 PM.
