Leopards Sweep Caltech To Remain Undefeated In SCIAC Play

Pasadena, CA - The University of La Verne women's basketball team traveled to Pasadena, California to take on the Caltech Beavers.

The Leopards looked to sweep the Beavers for the regular season after defeating them at home. After moving up in the national rankings, La Verne hoped to add to their undefeated record in the conference to move to 10-0. The Leopards battled in the first quarter and got a single-digit lead going into halftime. The Beavers were confident at home, knocking down a couple of 3-pointers to get them back into the game by the end of the third quarter. Both teams traded baskets, each failing to grasp a lead, and the game went into overtime. The Leopards ultimately prevailed, showing composure and knocking down critical free throws to seal the game 55-52.

Senior Jazzlyn Johnson led the Leopards with 13 points and six rebounds. Dawson Bell made key steals at the end, giving her 3 for the game, with 13 points and six rebounds. Dejanee Gill dominated the boards with 16 rebounds and 9 points.

Head coach Jason Pruitt understands the challenge his team now faces. "When you go from hunting to being being hunted, your perspective changes. I think our team is obviously learning how to be resilient. When you get a number beside your name, everyone is going to give you their all. Much respect to Caltech, they came out they played hard, they had a game plan and they stuck with it and made us uncomfortable. It's like Occidental's assistant Coach said last week, "They Coming." Everyone is coming and we just have to be better prepared for when they come. But I thought our ladies were tough, we just needed to stick with what has been working all season. I think we have been a little too comfortable out there, it's showing and that's on me! We have this Saturday off and we have 4 days to make adjustments. That doesn't guarantee us anything going forward. We're going to stick with our process, we have a really close-knit group here that works hard, we believe in what we're doing, we believe in what we're coaching, we believe in trying to win the way we're trying to win. And I think the ladies do, too. We are thankful that both teams made it out injury free. Go Leo's!"

The Leopards will host their next game vs. CMS Wednesday, February 1st, at 7 PM.
