Leopards Place Sixth At Cal State Intercollegiate Tournament

The University of La Verne golf team finished in sixth place at the California State Intercollegiate Tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Diamond Valley Golf Club in Hemet.

La Verne held the sixth-place position after 36 holes on Monday and concluded action with a combined 295 for a 54-hole total of 909 for the tournament.  The Leopards were the lone non-scholarship school in the field.

Cal State San Marcos finished first with a total of 883 followed by The Master's College at 890.  UC Riverside (891) placed third followed by Point Loma Nazarene (894) and Holy Names (898) to round out the top five positions.  La Verne (909) finished sixth followed by Embry-Riddle (930), Biola (941) and Arizona Christian (972).

Shane Favinger of Holy Names was the top finisher among individuals by shooting 217 (+1) in the 54-hole event.

The Leopards were led by senior Derek Zachman, who carded a 54-hole total of 225 (+9) to tie for 18th overall.  Zachman and was followed by freshman Bobby Palacios who shot 227 (+11) in his first collegiate tournament.  Sophomore Kelby Scharmann who finished at 229 (+13).  Sophomore Andre Bedard shot 233 for the tournament.
La Verne will next be in action at the Firestone Grill Invitational October 8-9 in Pismo Beach.
