After one round of play, the University of La Verne golf team sits in a tie for ninth place at the NCAA Division III Championships in Destin, Florida.

La Verne posted a team total of 298 (+14) on the Par 71 The Raven Course at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.  Methodist University, which opened on the Par 72 Links Course, tops the leaderboard with Transylvania in second place and Texas Tyler in third.

"We didn't play our best today but we like the position we're in," said Leopard head coach Chris Davis.  "We believe our best golf is ahead of us, so we need to stay focused heading into tomorrow."

The SCIAC Champion Leopards were paced by senior Derek Zachman, who finished with a 72 (34-38), ending the day tied for 15th in the individual standings.  Zachman was followed by Keven Holliday who fired a 74 (36-38) while Kelby Scharmann carded a 75 (34-41).  Paul Gomez concluded his first round with a 77 (36-41).

Action at the NCAA Championships continues on Wednesday with the Leopards playing their second round on the Links Course, the tournament's secondary course, at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.  Only the top 15 schools after Wednesday's second round will advance to compete in the final two rounds.
