La Verne Remains Tied For Ninth Through Second Round of NCAAs

The University of La Verne golf team remains in a tie for ninth place at the midway point of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships Wednesday at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida.

La Verne is at 599 after a second round total of 301 on the par 72, 6636-yard The Links course, tied with Emory for ninth place.  The leaders through two rounds are Transylvania and Texas-Tyler with totals of 579, followed by Methodist in third at 585.

Illinois Wesleyan (589) stands in fourth place followed by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (595), St. John's (596), Southwestern (597) and Gustavus Adolphus (598) in eighth.

Senior Derek Zachman continued to pace the Leopards after shooting 74 (38-36) for his second round.  His two round total of 146 put him in 15th place in the individual standings.  Sophomore Kelby Scharmann also posted a 74 (37-37) on the day and is tied for 30th among individuals with a total of 149.

Sophomore Trent Twamley was the third Leopard to shoot 74 (37-37) on Wednesday, moving him into a tie for 55th overall at 154.  Junior Paul Gomez shot 79 while fellow junior Keven Holliday carded an 81.  Gomez and Holliday head into Thursday's third round with totals of 155 and 156, respectively.

The third and fourth rounds will contain only the top 15 teams for Thursday and Friday's action.  Among the teams to miss the cut included top-ranked and defending national champion Oglethorpe, which finished with a two-day total of 617. 

La Verne will continue action on Thursday at The Raven course, beginning play at approximately 7:00 am Pacific Time.
