Leopards Hold Second Place At West Cup Thru 36 Holes

TEAM STANDINGS

The University of La Verne golf team resides in second place heading into Tuesday's final round after shooting a team total of 582 through the 36 holes Monday at the inaugural West Cup Tournament at Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma.

Tourney host La Verne is among eight teams in the deep tournament field currently ranked in the Top 25 of the current Golfstat Division III rankings.

Whitworth tops the team standings at 578 after two rounds, followed by the Leopards four strokes back.  SCIAC members Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (583) and Redlands (585) hold the third and fourth positions with Southwestern (586) in the fifth spot.

Paul Gomez led the way for the Leopards on Monday shooting a one under par 141 (72-69) through two rounds and is currently tied for sixth.  Kelby Scharmann is tied for 22nd after carding 146 (74-72) while Andre Bedard is tied for 28th with a total of 148 (72-76).  Derek Zachman sits in a tie for 50th after shooting 150 (77-73). 

La Verne's Trent Twamley, competing as an individual, shot 144 (69-75) and is tied for 16th on the leaderboard.

Individual leaders after two rounds include David Gazzolo of Division I UC Riverside with a total of 137 (-5).  John McCord from Redlands along with Whitworth's Oliver Rudnicki are tied for second at 141.

"It was great to get off to a good start today and position ourselves for tomorrow's final round," said head coach Chris Davis.  "Each of our players were consistent throughout the day and hopefully we can put it together to make a run at the top spot."

Action resumes Tuesday morning at the West Cup with the final 18 holes to set to begin at 7:30 am.
