La Verne, CA - The University of La Verne volleyball team welcomed Cal Lutheran University to The Tents for their final home game of the 2022 season. This final home game also signified the ending of careers for six Leopards. Jordyn Patton, Ayana Mier, Kari Essef, Jasmine Chandler, Rylee Callen and Emily Heldenbrand took the Leopard homecourt for the last time in their careers.
Having already secured a spot in the SCIAC tournament, the Leopards looked to avenge an early conference loss on the road to Cal Lutheran. The first set was highly competitive, as both teams started the contest matching each other point for point. Trailing through the first set, La Verne kept the set within three points until the latter stage, losing the first set by a score of 25-19.
La Verne would jump out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back. Cal Lutheran would call two timeouts during the set, but would be unable to stop the onslaught, as the Leopards smacked Cal Lutheran 25-12.
La Verne and Cal Lutheran would split the third and fourth sets, setting up a decisive fifth set to decide the match winner. La Verne would find themselves in a 7-1 hole early but fueled by the energy from their bench and the home crowd, the Leopards would secure the match with their play. Down 12-5, the Leopards ran off ten straight points to win the match 15-12.
The Leopards will travel to Claremont-M-S for the regular season conference finale tomorrow. The match starts at 4:00 PM.
