La Verne, CA - The University of La Verne softball team opened the SCIAC season by hosting the Redlands Bulldogs at the University of La Verne Softball Stadium for doubleheader action.
The game finally took place after storms throughout the Southern California region halted the play of many softball teams due to extreme rain and flooding.
The first game started with both teams going scoreless in the 1st inning of play. The Leopards would then reel off 4 runs in the second inning of play to take a 4-0 over the Bulldogs. After going scoreless in the 3rd and 4th innings, the Leopards would go on to score 5 additional runs in the 5th and 6th innings to take full control of the game and secure 9-5 victory. Seven different Leopards would score runs in the game with Haylee Hsieh and Ashley Rodriguez both scoring 2 runs apiece. Hsieh, Julie Contreras, and Taylor Gray all added 2 RBIs in the game. Rachel Rubio pitched 7 innings and had 2 strikeouts.
The second game would be a defensive battle as both teams controlled the game from the mound and the outfield. La Verne would take a 4-1 lead over Redlands in the first inning but would go scoreless the remained of the contest, falling to Redlands in a closely contested battle 5-4. Alyssa Campbell would add 2 RBIs and Haylee Hsieh would have one stolen base in the game.
La Verne returns back to action on March 7th at home against Buena Vista.
