La Verne, CA- The University of La Verne softball team opened up its series with the Whittier Poets at home in the University of La Verne Softball Stadium this afternoon.

The game would be a contest between two SCIAC teams seeking to claim superiority in the early conference season. 

The game would be a low-scoring affair, as both teams would go scoreless through the first two innings. Neither team would get a hit or run through the first two innings as both pitchers controlled the game from the mound. The third and fourth inning would see the Leopards allow 4 runs, as Whittier would lead 4-0 after four innings of play. Whittier would score again in the top of the sixth inning, but the Leopards would still not be able to score a run, as they would fall to Whittier 5-0.

SCIAC Pitcher of the Week Rachel Rubio would have 4 strikeouts in seven innings.

La Verne will take the field at Palmer Field tomorrow for doubleheader action. The game starts at noon.
